Gradište Monastery

Gradište Monastery, Buljarica

Gradište Monastery is a cultural site on a hill in Buljarica. The complex consists of three churches and monastic quarters. It is first mentioned in written sources in 1305; an earlier founding year given in tourist descriptions is cited as tradition.

Three churches and iconostases

The churches are dedicated to St Nicholas, St Sava and the Dormition of the Mother of God. The tourist organisation highlights the iconostases and a rare depiction of St Christopher in the Church of St Nicholas. View the interiors by arrangement with the hosts.

Link to the primer

TO Budva connects the monastery with the Serbian primer printed in Venice in 1597. This is interesting historical context for a visit, without assuming that the original book is on display in the complex.

How to fit in a visit

Gradište is a separate outing from the shore, with a climb up to the complex. Check access, whether you can stop there and visiting times. Dress appropriately for a religious site, and arrange in advance if you wish to photograph the interiors. The pin marks the complex, not the parking.
